Stories by the Fire

An evening of Balti oral history, told around a fire in Katpana

The story

Haji Ibrahim hosts this evening at Katpana, on the edge of the cold desert. Over butter tea and dried apricots he tells the stories Baltistan has carried by voice rather than book — the kings of Shigar, the fairies said to live on the peaks, the caravans that once crossed towards Yarkand. A Rawaan guide sits alongside to translate, so nothing is lost.

What it feels like

Firelight on the dunes, snow peaks silver behind, and the feeling of hearing something ancient first-hand.
