Karakoram Grand Circuit

The full sweep of the high north in one journey — Hunza's forts and orchards, the Khunjerab Pass at 4,693 m, Attabad by boat, and the Gilgit Serena to come home to.

The route

Day by day

  1. Day 1

    Islamabad → Besham

Onto the Karakoram Highway — the Indus takes the wheel.

  2. Day 2

    Besham → Gilgit

Gorge country all day, Nanga Parbat viewpoint at golden hour, Serena comforts by night.

  3. Day 3

    Gilgit → Karimabad

Rakaposhi fills the windscreen; by evening, walnut cake above the orchards.

  4. Day 4

    Forts & village lanes

Baltit Fort in the morning, Altit and its royal garden after lunch — a thousand years of Hunza in one day.

  5. Day 5

    Khunjerab Pass

To the roof of the highway — 4,693 m, snow in July, a border in the clouds.

  6. Day 6

    Attabad & Gulmit

The lake by private boat, then Gulmit's carpet weavers and the old suspension bridge for the brave.

  7. Day 7

    Slow Hunza day

Nothing scheduled. That's the point. (Your driver knows where the best apricot cake hides.)

  8. Day 8

    Karimabad → Chilas

Begin the long descent with a last Rakaposhi breakfast.

  9. Day 9

    Chilas → Islamabad

Over Babusar and down to the plains, nine days taller.
