Kalash: Chilam Joshi Festival

May in the valleys of the Kalasha — drums in the walnut groves, cowrie-shell headdresses, and a festival three thousand years old, attended as a family's guest.

The route

Day by day

  1. Day 1

    Islamabad → Upper Dir

Through Swat's orchards to the mouth of the Lowari Tunnel.

  2. Day 2

    Dir → Chitral

Under the Lowari and into another world — Tirich Mir floating above the town.

  3. Day 3

    Into Bumburet

The rough, beautiful road into the valleys. Evening walk through the village as festival preparations hum.

  4. Day 4

    Chilam Joshi

The festival, as Zarin's guest — the dancing ground, the milk blessing, dinner at his table.

  5. Day 5

    Rumbur valley & farewell

The quieter sister valley, goodbyes that take an hour, and the drive back to Chitral's comforts.

  6. Day 6

    Chitral → Islamabad

One long day home, drums still in your ears.
